Like most hand-printing methods, screen printing has a very distinctive appearance. Even if the surface is flat, the velvety finish and extreme vivacity of the ink cannot be replicated with any other technique. Screen printing can also be used on a variety of surfaces, so you can print anything that has a flat surface; paper, chipboard, fabrics, wood, leather and metal are all valid candidates!

Screen printing is a type of stencil, in which the ink passes through a fabric or a mesh screen. These screens are made of thin fabrics, traditionally made of silk, but nowadays they are usually a synthetic alternative, which is tightly tightened on a metal or wood structure. It can be used for printing on flat surfaces, including other fabrics, paper, metals or wood; and this is the process commonly used in print, graphic design and textiles.

The idea behind screen printing is to block or make waterproof the areas that you do not want to print. The ink or paint is then forced through the rest of the screen with a rubber blade, known as a spatula on the surface on which you want to print. The stencil can be created by applying an adhesive film (such as vinyl or tape) or paper, painting on it using "blockers" (glue, lacquer) or coating the screen with a light-sensitive emulsion which is then developed as a photograph.

Screen printing can be used to apply ink on any flat surface, although the surface is smoother, the results will be better. Fabric and paper are the most common screen printing surfaces, although wood, glass, Plexiglas and metal are also possible. Screen printing is the preferred printing method because of the tactile nature of the print and the saturated colors it creates with ink. It is very difficult to obtain the same depth and intensity of color when printing digitally.
